Pygmy Seahorse reproduction
As in other seahorses, males brood eggs in a pouch until young are released. Pregnancy lasts about two weeks, and one brood counted at birth numbered 34. The young are fully formed and receive no care.
Colour and swellings are alike in both sexes; females deposit eggs into male brood pouches. A pregnant male has a swollen, rounded belly. In pygmy seahorses the sexes are also reported to differ in a small opening low on the trunk, a slit in males and a raised pore in females.
