About this place

Garchinger Heide is a small protected calcareous grassland on the gravel plain north of Munich in Bavaria, one of the last remnants of the open heath that once covered the area. The author's sightings here are all invertebrates: crickets and bush-crickets in the grass, true bugs such as the Firebug and a shield bug, spiders and a harvestman, plus wasps and flies. All nine sightings were made over three days in August. Most came in the late afternoon and early evening, roughly 17:00 to 18:00 local solar time, with one field cricket found in open grassland around 09:00 in the morning. This is a virtual guide written by someone who has already been there, not a tour. You get the author's notes on each species, covering when and where they found it, and you can message the author with questions about the reserve. Wildlife is wild, and sightings are never guaranteed.Read more
